if they had a rule that if nothing happens in let's say 20 seconds on the ground to make them stand up again? If you watch the UFC ppvs you will notice that the crowd starts booing every time they are on the ground, especially when the guy is just on top of him resting, which a lot of them do. Stand up is just way more exciting than on the ground and it's hard to watch guys fight on the ground from the seats, I've been to a UFC event once, it was hard to even see clearly and I wasn't even far away.
This topic has been brought up by other mma haters, it's just silly. The only people who would want a silly rule like this are ignorant to how grappling works.
Personally, I wish they sat down fighters on the mat when they do nothing but dance on their feet. A great example would have been the Anderson Silva-Demian Maia fight. Silva clowned and ran away most of the time because he wanted absolutely nothing to do with Maia on the ground. If the ref can stand the fighters up when nothing is happening, the ref should be able to put them on the ground when they do nothing on their feet.
Mixed feelings about this. I think at one time PRIDE had a rule like this where the ref or someone would count to 30 and if there was no change in position (i.e. a guy shifting from a less dominant position to another more dominant one) then they'd stand them up. I think they actually do this in UFC but it's less formal than it was in PRIDE.
But Rigas is right, grappling is an essential part of MMA. There's a lot of strategy goin on even when it looks like nobody's moving. I do agree that if there's a stalemate for, say, 30-45 seconds it's probably better for marketing purposes if the crowd sees some fighting. I think the system now works.

They do stand them up eventually in UFC, I've seen it a couple times.
Look at what's happened with olympic judo over the last 10 years or so, it is now a crippled sport compared to what it was. If you don't like grappling, then don't watch it.
