Greater Minnesota lost 14% of its grocery stores between 2000 and 2013, according to the Center for Rural Policy in Mankato. Since then, data firm Nielsen has noted store closures in the past five years in Aurora, Clinton, Geneva, Victoria, Young America, Long Prairie and Onamia. In North Dakota from 2014 to 2019, the number of rural grocery stores dropped to 98 from 134, according to the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperative

A big concern for some elderly rural Minnesotans who are not tech savvy.

Most places lost far more than 14% and well before 2000.

All my rural relatives buy their groceries at Wal-Mart. They have a wider selection, lower prices, and fresher produce.

Your relatives are fortunate!-are they located in Minnesota?

In Minnesota there are 68 Walmarts and roughly 50 in "Greater Minnesota". My parents are 45 minutes away from a walmart. Luckily they are high functioning healthy octogenarians who can still drive and lift groceries. Not all are as healthy and as fortunate.

My family is about the same distance from their Wal-Mart. Yes, some people do not have a convenient grocery store.

I can’t even fathom living 45 minutes away from the nearest grocery store.

My relatives can’t fathom living 45 feet from your neighbors.

Yes, to each their own.

Dollar General is expanding in a big way. Mostly to rural outstate communities. They carry a selection of grocery's as well as sundries. Kwik Trips also expanding across the state and they carry a surprising amount of basic grocery's

As one who drives across the state quite a bit, I can say that most small towns have a gas station that is fairly well stocked for essential groceries even if the choices are limited.

A Casey's, Cenex, Shell, or Freedom exist in most towns, and sometimes all four. Even little Jasper in SW Minnesota has a Jasper Mini-Mart, which looks more like a small grocery store inside than it does a gas station.
