Hi everyone,

This is a great forum. Everyone here are doing a lot of help to others moving to other places. First of all Thanks for that whole-heartedly.

We are a family of 4 (2 children aged 7 and 1 year) thinking of moving from CA to MN (Rochester). We understand that its going to be a big shock seeing so much snow. We are making up our mind to take it up. But what we are very confused is, lot of people say that there are so much of mosquitos in and around rochester. Is this true? is this problem dealable my families have children? How much worse it is and how well we can cope up. Any thoughts. Thanks again for all your help.

It is true biting insects are a reality of life in Minnesota especially in the spring months.

Rochester is, however, in the southern part of the state and the relative lack of wetlands there means that there are much fewer biting insects than the northern part of the state.

If you are afraid of biting insects stay away from the rural areas in the north. I have mapped soils in St. Louis county (in the far northeast) which required me to spend whole days 5 days a week during the spring and summer months in the woods. At times, it was almost unbearable. During one spring in particular I would feel like a pincusion every time I came out of the woods. The deer flies, mosquitoes, horseflys together would swarm around my head and make a buzzing concerto similar in decibles to an oncoming train. Then after I would have to pick tens of woodticks off myself....sometimes hundreds it seemed.

It takes a special kind of fortitude to be in that and not go crazy.

Many people think it is completely bad, however, I think it is good in a way to get bit by bugs a few times. It gets the poisons in your body and each time you get bit your allergic reaction gets less and less.

Good luck.
Clayton

Mosquitoes not a problem right now!! LOL The past 2 years have been virtually mosquito free. We have always made it a point to spray our shrubs and grass for insect control.

The mosquitoes are not as bad as some people make them sound. I am sure you and your family will not have a problem dealing with them.
