Does the state of Minnesota require a license plate for boat trailers? Or do they just use a sticker applied directly to the trailer?

You need a plate, but I think you can buy a "lifetime" sticker for boat and "utility" trailers (i.e., trailers for ATVs/snowmobiles) so you don't have to renew it every year like you do with a car. I really should know this since we own a few trailers, but that's the hubby's department

Default Trailers

The State of Minnesota requires a permanent sticker applied to the tongue of the trailer. NO plate is required. They changed this a couple years ago at least.

Interesting. I had no idea about the change from plates to a sticker on the trailer.

Small trailers can get a lifetime license and require no plate (like my 16 ft. fishing boat). However large trailers require a plate and yearly tags (like my 22 ft. runabout).

Default MN boat trailers

If your trailer is rated for 3,000 pounds or less you purchase a lifetime sticker. Large trailers with an axle rating greater than 3,000 pounds require a boat trailer plate.

Yep. It's based on size, but most average boat trailers do not, and have not for many years.
