I have family who live in Anoka, Fridley and Coon Rapids. They have lived in the northern part of the metro for some time, some for 50 or so years. My aunt who has lived in her house in Coon Rapids off of River Rd. since 1980, and she was looking at moving since it was only her and her husband and her kids are older and moved out. Her husband fixes atm machines, and she ran a daycare out of her house. Her son is an auto mechanic.

I asked about her option of moving further west to either to Plymouth or Eden Prairie. She rolled her eyes and said, I dont think so. Those are such snooty suburbs. I dont think we would fit in very well. I then brought up either Andover or Albertville, St. Michael. She seemed much more accepting of those areas. I talked to other relatives, one in Fridley and they echoed the same thing about Plymouth and other western burbs in a very negative light.

What would the vibe in Albertville, Ham Lake, etc be compared to Western suburbs like Eden Prairie? The age of these suburbs are somewhat similar. I cannot imagine the people who chose one or the other are that different.

There is much more wealth in the west than anywhere else in the state. Nothing in the north is comparable. The three cities you mentioned are blue collar, EP, Plymouth, etc are white collar. I own a lawn/snow service and when I plow in Coon Rapids people show up to home after work around 3-4….when I’m plowing in Roseville that same day, many people come home around 5-6.

I'm with your aunt on this one. With some exceptions, these western 'burbs are basically McMansions, manicured yards, and luxury vehicles as far as the eye can see.
