As a general rule, the southern suburbs are a little spendier than the northern suburbs - so you will get less for your money.
That's not to say you can't find what you are looking for south of the Cities, but I just did a quick check and you can find more in the north.

Each city will have websites that can link you to most everything you might want to know about the area. I suggest doing a little digging and find a community where you think you will feel most comfortable.

Great, thanks! I've noticed the same thing through my searching...prices a bit higher on the south / west side. We would prefer to stay in the Western or Southern suburbs although we are open to any location at this point.

What are the best websites to use for home searches? I'm mostly using Trulia...any others you recommend?

For some reason, I'm drawn to Lakeville when doing my online searches.... I know the schools rank fairly high. Is there a "downtown" area to Lakeville? Does it have a small town feel? How about a community center or pool? Any personal experience anyone can share would really be appreciated!

I would say just about any real estate brokerage will have a website with a good search engine. I cannot recommend one over another in these forums, because of what I do.

i think edina realty has the best/most comprehensive site. but i've always used them to buy/sell my homes so.....

lakeville has a small/older downtown with a small town feel but the community in general overall is suburbia and all that that implies. it's population is almost 60,000 and growing. lakeville/apple valley/farmington are all similar in amenities/stores and in fact, it's difficult to know when you've left one city and entered another. the differences will be schools and city governments.

Western, and, to a lesser degree, Southern suburbs are generally more expensive for a reason - residents have (sligthly or significantly) higher income, more education; the schools are better. That said, there are excellent schools in the northern (Mounds View) and eastern (Woodbury, Mahtomedi) metro.

How many beds/baths are you looking for?

Where will you be working? Commute time can vary depending on what direction you are coming from.
