There were all archetypes: cranky sexist boss, dumb vain anchor, cynical news writer, etc. How Mary the independent career woman dealt with them was the whole show.

Comedy thrives on conflict and/or misunderstandings, which is why so much comedy relies on hit-you-over-the-head extremes in characters to create the conflict (or those zany situations ... what! a cosmonaut's capsule floated into the lagoon!).

The MTM show was a bit more nuanced and well-written, but the Lou character was the counterpoint to create situations. And the Lou character evolved, probably faster than many 50-year-old men did during the same time period in the '70s.

Agreed. Nobody was a caricature - not even Ted really.
