To get from New Brighton Blvd to Hennepin along Stinson (which is 1 mile) you'll run into 6 stoplights and many other driveways (some with stop signs). If you take the stretch along New Brighton Blvd you'll run into 4 stoplights in half a mile (and end up with no where to go once you get to Broadway). There also will be a bunch of traffic.

That's why I'm thinking of hugging the residential streets, at least at first anyway. I've ridden a bike twice in my life and in all honesty am not THAT good at it yet. My longest haul was 7 miles but that was at night on the east river parkway and some area near St. Thomas U in St. Paul with little traffic.

I'll get my bike legs first and learn the ropes of how bike traffic is treated in the cities and see how it goes. One really can't blame me, most parts of Lexington don't even have sidewalks

I'd love to hear more about bike culture in general, what local rules and regulations are, customs, avoiding wrecks in high traffic areas etc.
