I meant that he should concentrate on trying to find a job in one of the areas more realistically livable without a car. OR, if he wants to relocate for the job and can only find one in Eagan, than be prepared to make getting a car a priority. I can't imagine any one in good faith telling someone that they could easily live in Eagan without a car, especially if they're working odd hours and have an interest in nightlife. I wouldn't take a job with odd hours in many local suburbs and expect to get by without a car (especially if also wanting to go out and do things in the evening), that's all.

I agree with BobMarley that it will certainly be doable to live without a car in the cities or certain inner-ring suburbs.

As far as differences between walking, I think that's best left for a different discussion (don't want to distract from the OP's question), but I think that yes, there are differences between walking for recreation and walking for transportation. Just as I think there are differences between going out for a casual fun drive cruising the lakes on the weekend versus commuting to work in the morning. Ideally a location is set for both, but it's been my experience that many of the middle and outer suburbs are not set up for walking for transportation.

OP, just a hint I've found out as I've learned to navigate the MSP bus system: use google maps. The trip planner at metrotransit.org is ok, but sometimes if you punch in two locations on google maps and put it to busing directions, it will come up with something better. Might be worth looking at, if you are looking at specific companies and want to check your busing options to get there. (obviously you are getting some conflicting advice, so you will want to check things out for yourself)

Also, the total trip time returned by the trip planner on metro transit does not include any time spent walking to or from bus stops/stations.
