I saw this on the news today and looked it up online. I am speechless. This has to be one of the biggest slaps in the face to American citizens yet. Maine has been a top vacation spot for us for many years. I will be rethinking if I want to spend my money there this year.

I have been wanting to move back to Maine for decades and have to wait until I can retire to do so in order to afford it. This country needs to send these so called “asylum seekers” back to where they came from, they are just a burden anyway.

This is so wrong

Maine's governor was able to get a bunch of Federal tax dollars under the guise of 'Emergency COVID relief' funding, and that money was quickly diverted to a laundry list of non-covid things. Which included rent checks for low-income renters.

We have 12 apartments that we manage with the idea of helping low-income and formerly homeless people. These are tiny single-occupancy efficiencies, that include heat and electricity. Rent was set at just a hair below one-quarter of Minimum Wage. Anyone who holds a job, any job, can afford to rent one of my apartments without any need for any government handouts.

If you can hold a job flipping burgers or making sandwiches, you can afford your own apartment.

But for the past two years, each of our tenants has been using Emergency rent relief funds to pay their rent. They come to me asking for an apartment, they show proof of a job, and I hand them a lease. In nearly every case they quit their job and apply for free money from the state.

Of course, it chaps me that Illegals can come here and are given free housing, food, and money to spend. Some states are even handing out full college scholarships.

There is no accountability today.

Hi Sub Some U.S. citizens have disability income that they use or can use to pay rent, etc. Thank you for providing some affordable apartments. Sad that some (maybe all) quit their jobs; are they U.S. citizens?

We use the term "free" but those who pay taxes are paying for it. We should add "free" healthcare to the list, at least in some states. Is Maine offering "free" healthcare along with the apartments?

I agree.

I think so, but I am not certain.

For the last few weeks, we have been dealing with our insurance agent.

The policy that provided comprehensive insurance for our building, has been running around $2,000 a year for the past few years. But this year, due to the 'antifa' riots of the past two years [looting, destruction and burning of cities] the cheapest policy we can get right now is $24,000 a year. Even if we were to drop insurance to only personal liability it would still be $2,500.

This building has fire sprinklers through out. Which is supposed to get us cheaper insurance, I have no idea what insurance would cost in 2024 if we did not have sprinklers.

Lets be real, what kind of "non citizens" does Maine really have, French Canadians? It sure as hell ain't Latinos or Asians. The state is 95% White!
