USNWR released its rankings for the best high schools in the United States at midnight Tuesday, and as always several Long Island high schools appeared among the top-ranking public high schools in the country.

The rankings of Long Island schools were as followed. 20 LI schools were ranked in the top 1,000 nationally:

1. Jericho High School, #114 nationally (down from #104)
2. Garden City High School, #176 nationally (up from #199)
3. Manhasset Secondary School, #177 nationally (up from #251)
4. Great Neck South High School, #206 nationally (down from #205)
5. Syosset High School, #259 nationally (up from #336)
6. Wheatley School (East Williston), #280 nationally (up from #305)
7. Cold Spring Harbor High School, #283 nationally (down from #268)
8. Herricks High School, #317 nationally (down from #257)
9. Great Neck North High School, #399 nationally (up from #463)
10. Harborfields High School (Greenlawn), #420 nationally (down from #373)
11. Half Hollow Hills High School East, #421 nationally (down from #363)
12. North Shore High School (Glen Head/Sea Cliff), #420 nationally (down from #335)
13. Roslyn High School, #493 nationally (down from #451)
14. Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, #529 nationally (up from #637)
15. Half Hollow Hills High School West, #532 nationally (up from #561)
16. Bethpage Senior High School, #657 nationally (up from #993)
17. South Side High School (RVC), #660 nationally (up from #1,426)
18. Paul D. Schreiber High School (Port Washington), #705 nationally (down from #629)
19. John F. Kennedy High School (Bellmore-Merrick), #898 nationally (down from #834)
20. Locust Valley High School, #980 nationally (up from #1,428)

What do we think of the rankings? Any surprises? I am always so impressed by the quality of public schools on LI and how they consistently perform alongside charter and magnet schools. They seem to only get better too.

Generally speaking there are absolutely no surprises considering the demographics, wealth, and presence of college-educated parents in the very top LI districts.

As one reads down the top ten on this list, Harborfields continues to punch above its weight. Not sure what the secret sauce is over there but it’s been working the last 25 years or so.

Bethpage at 16 (LI public schools) is a bit of a surprise. They have to be pleased with this ranking.

Jericho is ‘ranked’ 11 in New York State …one has to recognize that each of the 10 schools ranked above it is a NYC selective/competitive school. Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech, etc.

Bethpage has been getting better and better every year. It seems to me that its growing Asian population (it’s 20% now) is correlating with the district getting better. If it continues on its current path it will be held in similar regard to Plainview and Half Hollow Hills within the next decade. Good for them.

Jericho is seriously impressive. You’re right, it is the best high school in the state that doesn’t have selective enrollment.
