Trump did what he had to do at the time. He fell for the Fauci/Bill Gates fearmongering vaccine scam. He still doesn't realize the vaccine was a sham and masking and the shutdown was all media fear.

Real question, if masks were just fear, are filters in your car or your house(air and water) also useless? Or do you take them out immediately as well/not replace them - asking for a friend. What benefit do they really offer since masks is another name for filter but for you respiratory system. Are filters also fear mongering by the filter companies to make more money?

Because at that time I think people still assumed that our government/establishment elites had our best interests in mind and weren't just shilling for Pfizer and shutting down the roaring economy to help expel a President that made them feel icky. All that good faith is lost, like tears in the rain.

The decision to ultimately close, was a lose lose except for big pharma. Every decision at that point in time, would have resulted in a lose lose. It the devil you know vs the devil you don't know but doing nothing was unacceptable. But Trump closed off flights to the US and schools, and was blamed for not closing early enough... or am I remembering it wrong?

Some masks/filters are not useless, but many are. A virus, which is what we were dealing with in Covid is incredibly small and can easily pass right through the majority of what people were using, such as surgical masks or cloth masks. These types of masks don't "reduce" viral load, either - they are not, let's say, 25% effective or something like that. It only takes a small amount of virus to get someone else sick, and a couple of breaths in an ineffective mask is plenty enough to provide that.
A surgical mask is designed to prevent spittle from getting into the mucus membranes or open cavities of a patient during surgery, not to prevent viral transmission. There are higher end masks that can stop viral transmission, but they are incredibly uncomfortable to wear, and generally only protect the wearer since they have one-way valves/exhaust ports that are unfiltered. Most have warnings on them not to wear them for very long as they reduce your oxygen intake. That's setting aside the developmental damage they do to kids in classroom learning.
Similarly not all water filters or furnace filters are designed to protect against all threats. Furnace filters have a MERV rating, and the higher the rating, the more they will stop - within reason, of course. Some are rated for viruses, but most people don't use them, and since these systems are rarely airtight, the same air is sucked around the sides of the filter and gets through anyway. Places that absolutely require clean air like factories that produce microchips or pharmaceuticals, use advanced HEPA filters within fully sealed rooms. Water that has to be completely free of contaminants is filtered using a process called reverse osmosis, or distillation - your average Brita filter isn't getting your water anywhere near that clean.
Regardless, there have been several peer-reviewed studies in the last couple of years (in addition to the older studies when they were thinking masking would be good for outbreaks of The Flu) that have shown masking makes little to no difference at the macro level to prevent viral transmission.
