Houchl made her peace with fact Suzzoi was going to be the dem's choice, once that was over and done with there was no point in dragging things out.
Longer Suzzoi is in office gives democrats an advantage (so they likely presume) in keeping seat come 2024 elections. Suzzoi himself likely can bank on power of incumbency (however short) in fending off primary challengers. He only needs to survive primary to likely hang onto seat in general election.
It's truly disgusting way NYS politics works, but there you are.

Or Suzzoi loses (like he did for governor and county exec) and this whole thing blows up in their face lol . The special election although will probably have a higher turnout than a typical one due to the media attention will still have a far lower turnout then the general, that will help the republicans chances. In fact they purposely did it near presidents day in the hope turnout will be higher. Also depending on the outcome of that court case the district map could be completely different in 24 meaning an incumbency for either side may not mean much.

Making peace with Suozzi or not that had little impact on when the Special Election was going to be held. Hochul did set the date, but outside of a few exceptions, which weren't really present in this case she was bound to set it in a 2-3 week window anyway

FWIW, the timing of the Special Election really didn't have much to do with thoughts on impact on turnout. It was based off the timing of the vacancy and State statute which determines on when the Special Election could occur. With the Dec 1 expulsion it pretty much had to happen sometime in February with the middle of the month being most likely
Quote:
3. Upon the failure to elect to any office, except that of governor or
lieutenant-governor, at a general or special election, at which such
office is authorized to be filled, or upon the death or disqualification
of a person elected to office before the commencement of his or her
official term, or upon the occurrence of a vacancy in any elective
office which cannot be filled by appointment for a period extending to
or beyond the next general election at which a person may be elected
thereto, the governor shall, unless otherwise provided for by authorized
local law, resolution or ordinance, make proclamation of a special
election to fill such office within ten days of the occurrence of a
vacancy, specifying the district or county in which the election is to
be held, and the day thereof, which shall be: a. not less than seventy
nor more than eighty days from the date of the proclamation to fill a
vacancy in the office of a representative in congress or for a vacancy
in any other office that is not in the state senate or assembly

Yes but she could have chosen other dates later in the month. The chair of the Nassau Dem party quoted that early date was chosen in the hopes turnout would be better.
