Mentally ill people shouldn't be able to obtain a gun. It's a recipe for disaster. Will our NRA friends agree that the second amendment's right to bear arms doesn't extend to nut-jobs like this one?

The police officer did what he needed to do to avert a tragedy. Good work there. But we also need to address how this deranged person managed to get a gun. Where did it come from? Too many guns, IMHO, are too easily available, especially from certain pro-gun states. We need better, common sense restrictions.

No idea who your NRA friends are, but I don’t think anybody on this planet wants mentally ill folks owning weapons (or prancing around the middle of a dangerous intersection with a sharp stick or even empty handed, for that matter).

Do you have any idea at all if this particular he/she had a legal permit to carry his/her pistol? It could be that this particular nut job already has no right to bear arms in New York State in this manner.
