because everything on LI is named after Native American things.... from the towns, to the roads, to the school teams.... No one cared for 100s of years, why start now?
A WARRIOR, BRAVE is not upsetting to anyone......... Redmen, Indian ok maybe...
But in Sachem;s case... its litterally an ARROW HEAD!
its about state govt overreach as well. local schools boards should have local control
I think the town names are safe, just my opinion
But thanks for explaining your point of view

Literally most town names are native names...... Massapequa, Hauppauge, Patchogue, Montauk or school districts are named for natives. Connetquot, Sachem, Comsewogue
Why shouldnt these districts be allowed to use a native "mascot" for lack of a better term.?
In Sachems case... an arrow head is offensive to who??? the deer and turkeys they killed to eat?
In Connetquots case - Thunderbird???? offsensive to who?

I can see both sides of the fence here.
Me personally, this is what I see in my mind when I hear the word mascot:
It can come off as a mockery
The town names are safe because they pay homage to who was there first

It is kinda funny that the Regents are scrupulously avoiding the fact the school district names (Sachem, Syosset, etc.) are Native American words. It’s actually quite logical for those districts to have Native American nicknames/imagery. In both cases paying homage to those who were here first.
And nothing is safe nowadays. I see them coming after school district names. (School districts and towns are distinct entities here on LI).

I'm not sure about that, but the Mohonasen SD outside of Schenectady is a district gets its name from pieces of the Mohawk, Onondaga and Seneca. The Board of Regents stated that districts with Native American based names can stay and it is all about the mascot/nickname that schools use. Here is an article about that: https://www.timesunion.com/news/arti...n-17648766.php
So, school district names aren't on the table. I don't see that coming especially for districts named after a town/hamlet/village/city with a Native name, like Massapequa, Wyandanch(who is an example of a district that tried to negotiate with a Native group to keep their nickname but with ), Manhasset, etc.
How can a Thunderbird be considered insulting? Lol. It’s just Bs all around.
Again, do not underestimate the input of Native Americans on this topic. I think this is getting overlooked, but I think there is more to this, in terms of this not having political implications.

Because the uniform companies need new business. I hope all these districts buy new uniforms and such from online companies that aren’t based in NY.
