At the risk of sounding like the "troll" or bad guy on this thread, I feel that conversations like this one are the explanation as to why folk on LI are constatnly screaming about the cost of living. This is a $1000 job at most. As was suggested, spend a night getting the oil out and have some friends haul the old tank out-sawzall it if you need to. Buy the new tank at HD or a supply house and get it in place, then get an independent plumber to hook it up if you are not comfortable doing that. If you make 100k.year, you just save 1 percent of your total pre-tax income in a heartbeat.
The solutions are all around us- plant a small veggi garden and save on food- canning and preserving stuff for the off season. Get a wood stove and split free wood that tree services will give you. Learn how to do basic auto and home maint/repair tasks. I feel if most LI families did these things they would free up thousands in disposable income and maybe even be able to be sing income families and have a parent at home with their young kids.
