Hello all...with the crazy rain we had Wednesday, I had a good amount of water enter my basement through the chimney "clean-out" door. I had one guy come by to look, and plan on getting a few more opinions. I was thinking the water was getting into the chimney through cracks below grade, but the first guy thinks it was from cracks in the mortar above ground. He thinks repointing would resolve the issue of water running down the inside of the chimney and into the basement. Thoughts? Anyone have this job done, and if so, what are some ballpark figures. He gave me a price of $1,200 to chisel out all the old mortar and repoint. He would also dig 2-3 feet below grade and re-stucco the exterior of chimney. Thanks

Seems like a lot for something as simple as re-mortaring but I have no experience with the issue...

Had same issue and repointing solved it. I paid somewhere in that neighborhood from what I remember.

The work that I had done was to remove the bricks above the roof line and re-cement them back in place. It cost about $900 a couple of years ago. They also re-cemented a few brick in other spots.

Make sure that they are using Mortor and not Cement. The guy behind me just had his roof done, while they worked on the roof another guy was repairing the chimney crown. Next thing I saw was a repointing of all brick above the roof line.

This was all done in the rain on Thursday, this morning it's dry and all the cement used between the bricks is dry and almost white, looks real bad.

I am told that cement is so hard it will damage the brick so be carefull that who ever you hire knows what they are doing.

Thanks guys. Second quote was for 2k, so 1200 is looking a little better. Will be getting a few more quotes. If anyone has recommendations, please share. I'm in Nassau on the south shore.

We just got a quote for $3000 for the following:

- repoint furnace chimney from foundation to the crown. Fill all cracks and resecure any loose bricks.
- waterproof entire chimney
- build a 1x6 double wood frame on crown of chimney, cover wood with aluminum. Install stainless steel chase cover on crown of chimney

What company did you call that gave you $1200 estimate? That sounds a lot better than $3000
