I would only start questioning the quality of an area when there are consistent shootings or strings of shootings in a short time period.

A shooting can happen anywhere. Over a domestic dispute... Having alcohol into the mix... Kids playing around and being dumb... An armed burglary gone bad... Hunting accident...etc etc. But when two or more shootings happen in a period under 2-3 months then it should start raising an eyebrow.

What I thought said something bad about that area was how unnoticed the shooting went, as though it was common in the area.

They could've not wanted to bring negative publicity to their area and affect their reputation.

lol, if I knew a shooting happened in my neighborhood then I would definitely not talk/brag about it in a social settings!

A COP getting shot may have affected Massapequa Park's reputation, but it was all over the news!
But you made a good point.

Perhaps you might be able to augment your assertion with some credible reporting of just why you have arrived at this conclusion?
Is it because you "tend to agree" with another poster's assessment, or do have more than just heresay to offer? Could you define "pretty bad'
in comparative terms with the many other degrees of badness, (i.e., dangerous, crime ridden, gangland, economically deplete, etc.) or whatever
else might clarify your statement? I would certainly hope that your opinion is somewhat supported by factual data, statistics or anything greater
than personal feelings, I've lived here in Copiague for 38 years and believe that it is as good, or better than many other Long Island communities
and I often wonder why people who don't live here, have this slanted and misguided criticism, help me out dude, give me your reason!

I admit I do not know the area by 109 as well even though I am going up and down Rt 109 almost every day. I do not like the "Pine something" motel on 109 (past the Burger King going south) but the side streets look fine.

And I still disagree with you about the 40s (near Zahns) and certainly about Copiague down by the water. The Town of Babylon, for the most part, is more a working class blue collar type of Town. If you want perfection than you need to head toward the North Shore or Garden City or something.

I am not trying to pick on you Razor, but we should be careful about casually badmouthing neighborhoods because thousands of middle class people have their life savings invested in their homes. For instance, a random shooting can happen anwhere. Long Island, including Lindenhurst, are considered pretty safe, especially by national standards.

It's pretty bad compared to the rest of the 11757 ZIP, since it looks kind of run down, considering it's on the water. And when people ask about how "good/safe" an area, there is nothing really to use other than hearsay, as there is no accurate source for crime data of the different areas of Long Island.

Default A map of the Hamlet of Copiague in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County

A map of the Hamlet of Copiague in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County:

The Hamlet of Copiague has a different border than does the "Copiague, NY 11726" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Copiague, NY 11726" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Copiague and a place can have other than a "Copiague, NY 11726" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Copiague): places that have a "Copiague, NY 11726" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Copiague are in the Hamlet of North Amityville; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Copiague with an "Amityville, NY 11701" and "Lindenhurst, NY 11757" mailing address.
