Mother in law's brother and nephew in Letcher Co lost their homes but got out alive. Every town around has major flooding. All time record flood at Whitesburg by 4 feet.

Glad they got out okay. The pictures are quite sobering.

Firemen from Mayfield, where the Dec. 10 tornado hit, are headed to eastern Ky. to help out. And several groups are getting ready to head east with donations of food, clothing and building supplies. There has also been a call sent out for pet food. I know dog food was in big demand after the tornado.

Sending prayers to all affected in Eastern Kentucky. Very sad situation--just terrible.

My mom and her family are from Eastern Kentucky originally. I still have a few relatives living in southeastern Kentucky, Barboursville and Corbin areas.

Flooding has always been such a huge issue over there. Hoping infrastructure investments and improvements may help for the future prevention of such a terrible disaster.

Condolences to families who lost loved ones.

There are several towns in the region with great flood protection - Pineville, Harlan, and Pikeville. The first two had expensive flood walls put up and in the decades since the town populations have declined while many rural residents continue living in dangerous flood prone areas. It's not feasible to provide flood walls to every cluster of several homes where there is no flat ground above flood zones. I hope this spurs many such people to consider moving to higher ground on former surface mine sites or within flood walled towns.
