Folks, getting closer to pulling the plug on the west coast and could use some input. What would be your list of the 5 best towns in your state? These things would be important to us:

Town of 7500 or less
Scenic beauty
Medical care near or in town
Good high schools close by
Best weather for the state (4 seasons)
Neat downtown
Great people

If you know of such a place to research please let us know.

Thank you.

The 7500 or less with amenities is going to be hard. Even Berea is 13,000+ in population.

If you want a smaller town with close amenities, with population of about 7500, I would imagine you would be looking in the exurbs or just past the exurbs of Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati.

Versailles and much of Woodford County would be eligble. Versailles is a little under 10K per 2017 Census estimates. It is just outside of Lexington and Woodford County has a good high school.

Further south on I-75 is London and Corbin as mentioned upthread, which may be good choices too, but depending on what kind of medical care you are seeking to be near (small community hospitals will be far different from university-based research and teaching hospitals) and how far you wish to drive for it, that makes this a best guess of an answer.

I'd look at Maysville.

We live in Paris(only Sav-a-lot and WallyWorld, but a good hospital), but also like Georgetown, Berea, Versailles, and do most of our shopping in Winchester. All of the state is BEAUTIFUL, some areas are more horses and cows, others are lumpy and still others are mountainous. We also have several lake areas if you want to be near water! Good luck in your search!

There are many towns that fit the desired criteria, Maysville certainly being one, except the population is just a little under 9000, not 7000.

Yes, I saw that, but Maysville does check off most of the boxes outlined by the OP.

I personally like Western KY a lot better than most. Poverty isn't nearly as extreme there and there are many bigger towns with good amenities. Almost everywhere is within 45 minutes or less of one of those hub towns. Central KY also has many nice towns but also is more expensive and has tons of regulations.

When I was searching for a place to call home in KY, I truly liked the western part of the state. The deciding factor for me was my desire to have hills around me and I wanted to be close to Appalachia or in Appalachia for that reason. Oddly enough Mason county (Maysville) is virtually surrounded by Appalachian counties but not considered one for whatever reason. Any way you slice it, KY has a lot to offer, much more so than most people realize.
