Kentucky ranks in the middle of the pack statewise for crime usually, perhaps a little safer than average. Maine is typically ranked as one of the safest states in the nation (with Vermont, North Dakota...). Meth is also a big problem in KY. My state trooper buddy attests to the fact that in some rural areas of the state it is an "epidemic" and yes, he used that word. Marijuana is also grown extensively throughout the state.
As I said though, the state on a whole is pretty safe. Don't become involved in drugs and don't live in the rough areas of the bigger cities (Louisville or Lexington basically) and it is a very safe place to live. But that can be said of almost anywhere.
