Good morning. I would like to find out information on Paducah, KY please. My husband is interviewing for a job in this area and I would like to get some information please on housing and the area. I know it is right on the Illinois border on the river.

Looking at a map, it looks like a small town with the bigger cities (Nashville, Louisville, St. Louis) a couple hours or more away. We have lived in bigger cities (Birmingham, Tampa) but do not mind going smaller. We are in our early 50s and do not need to know about schools. We would want to rent a home first in order to check out the area and would be looking for a 3 bedroom/2 bath home with a 2 car garage. I am not sure the cost of living in Paducah so I will just say we are now paying $1050 for a rental house as described above with about 1600 square feet.

Commute-wise, my husband would not mind driving 20 miles to get to a job in Paducah, but it looks like most of the area within 20 miles are also small towns.

Any Super Walmarts around this area?

Thanks for any help you can give us!!!

Rent will be much less. Overall cost of living is about 20% below the national average.

Paducah has 2 Super Walmarts. Most of the major big box stores and chain restaurants, but no Target.

From a large urban perspective, think of Paducah as a detached suburb, with nothing else around it.

Living in the small towns within 20 miles, doesn't accomplish much, unless you really want to live in a small town.

I grew up in Mayfield, about 25 miles south of Paducah. My dad drove, in a carpool to the Gaseous Diffusion plant west of Paducah, for 34 years. Round trip from Mayfield to the plant was about 90 miles. Why didn't he just move to Paducah? He didn't want his boys to have to go to Paducah Tilghman High School. Nothing wrong with the school but the Mayfield/Tilghman rivalry in football has been going since the 1920s. There's not a thing wrong with living in a small town. Done it all my life...so far. You'd be surprised how many people commute to jobs in and around Paducah. I know a couple who just moved to the area from the Chicago area. they live outside of Murray and she works at Walmart on the north side of Paducah.
You can get an idea of the price of homes (not rent) on Find Real Estate Listings, School and Neighborhood Information and More - Realtor.com® . Wanting to check the small towns in the area, look at Mayfield, Benton, La Center, Lone Oak. Some listings around Benton, Gilbertsville, Briensburg, could show some houses in the Kentucky Lake area

Thank you both so much for the info. I looked at the real estate site and was surprised to see there were houses up to $1 million and lost of very nice, very high-priced homes. Wow! Didn't know they existed in Paducah.

It was confusing though cause then I saw some "cute" little homes (though not real little) 3 brd/2 ba that were priced under $100,000. I am sure it has to do with the area they are in I guess, but I didn't know if Paducah had any "bad" areas which I didn't really think there were.

I will look into Paducah more this weekend but appreciate both of your replies.

You might want to look in the Lowertown area. Older buildings, but have been rehabbed to luxury standards. There's usually some on Craigslist. They're pricey for this area, but if you've been paying $1050, it shouldn't be a problem.

Hey JustMe. Hope the job interviews went well. We have lived in Paducah for 10 years and love the town and the people. THe city has a lot to offer, but what it doesn't, you can get within 2 hours drive. As the previous poster stated, there are 2 super-walmarts (1 that is packed all the time) and tons of eatery. Noble Park is nice and so are the neighboring areas. A fair arts market if you are into theater and arts. Paducah is also home of the quiltters. They invade the town for a week once a year. Great for the area businesses. If you are in the market for a home or rental home, you can let me know as we are having to move and have a home available. 3 bed/ 2.5 bath and 2 car garage. It is fsbo. Let me know if you are interested. You can view it @ www.paducahopenhouse.com
