Since people can't decide whether Kentucky is southern or midwestern why not forget all that and call Kentucky a western state? That way there would be consensus.
Western? Half of the state is in the eastern time zone! I don't consider any thing as being "west" until past Missouri.
Agreed, after all, if you lived in London, Maine would be a western state. How about we keep this relevant, east of Mississippi is the east, west of Mississippi and east of Missouri is midwest, west of missouri is west. Does that sound reasonable to most folks?

It was the old northwest. And the "Midwest" is very different than "the west".
Before the Louisiana purchase, anything west of the Appalachians was the west. I assume the reason the term "Midwest" came along, is because the country kept going and the old west became the center.
Also, Kentucky is southern. This was debated to death and, apparently, back. Kentucky is the at the top of the south and therefor has relations with the Midwest, but is very much a southern state.
Ohio river = central border between the north and south. Specifically between the south and eastern Midwest.

Midwestern is as much a geographical and social aspect as it is a purely positional one. Much of Ohio is definitely midwestern in terms of topography and values. Cleveland has a bit more of a northeastern feel in my opinion, and much of the SE part of the state is southern/Appalachian
