I just recently moved to Evansville, and I am still not sure about areas to avoid. After having driven around, I see areas that look like I don't need to be there (some places downtown, Diamond Ave, etc). But I still have a hard time figuring out the safety. It seems to me that a lot of the desirable places to visit like Barnes and Nobles sit up against (or fairly close to) areas like Washington Square that may not be that safe. A few weeks after I got here, the tanning place I had visited got robbed at gunpoint. It seems like there have been a couple of shootings. I just want to make sure I am staying in safe areas. Any tips? Thanks!

Washington Square in Evansville is not in a rough area. Businesses get robbed in Newburgh, rural northern Vanderburgh County; that can happen anywhere. I wouldn't give up on an area just because of a business hold-up. Unfortunately, that can and does happen anywhere.

Generally speaking, the Covert Ave corridor is considered one of the worst parts of town. Jacobsville is not a great area, but they are trying to improve it. There are parts of Riverside Dr between Garvin and 41 that are not great. I am not afraid to visit any of these areas, though outside of a couple of restaurants there is not a lot of reason to be through there anyway.

This is an easy problem to fix. Get a concealed weapon permit and all areas will be "safe".
