Regarding the remote work discussion. I've been working remote 6 years now and would never go back to an office! You can keep that commute, useless business casual clothing we had to buy (aka work uniform), the office talkers that stopped by every day to ramble on about nothing, constant interruptions breaking your focus, the boss/coworkers that arrive extra early and leave extra late making you feel guilty for leaving after 8 hours and on and on... No thanks, never doing that again!

OP, we moved away (to the Atlanta area) and then moved back. Atlanta never felt like home and it was too hot. Been back in Illinois for ~4 years now. I admit that we're now considering something in the middle with a little less Winter. I actually enjoy Winter/snow, but it's a bit much here. Unfortunately we have not found a suitable alternative that doesn't have an astronomical CoL.
I may move out of the state but not to a neighboring state to save a few bucks. I will be moving for a milder climate and significantly lower taxes. I don't gain all that much moving to Iowa or Wisconsin.

Back to OP. Yes I am moving out of Illinois temporarily which will likely turn long term. I've lived in Illinois my whole life and Chicago last 15+ years but my reasons for moving are simple:

1. Milder weather with more outdoor things to do more than 5-6 months a year (boating, hiking, golf, skiing, etc.)
2. Minimal covid rules in other states (life's too short to live in lockdowns another year)
3. Chicago is awesome. Rest of Illinois is not. And do not like idea of eventually moving to suburbs.
4. Debt and tax situation of Illinois.
What a ridicules comment to make. To say that Chicago is great and the rest of the state and residents are garbage. SMH

One area I'm looking at moving is rural Vilas County, WI in the Northwoods. It is getting expensive, but a very high quality of life area for those that are working remotely. Yes, real winters there too, I've been there when it was nearly -30F in March.

Default Not all of Washington

The eastern part of the state is a bit sunnier but it gets way colder and way more snow (Spokane I believe gets more snow than Chicago).
That does not apply to all of Washington, just western Washington. East of the Cascade Mountains, the climate is very different and enjoys distinct seasons. Springs are balmy and sunny; summers are sunny, hot, and dry; autumns are warm and sunny; and winters are cold and snowy. Winters are not as snowy as they were 30-40 years ago and they also have more overcast days than they used to, but not as bad as western Washington and they don’t suffer the relentless drizzle and rain that western Washington does.
