If those things can be found in B-N, then why do ISU students come to Peoria for them?

I saw some of the small communities around B-N listed...I'd like to add Mackinaw. My brother and his family have lived there for about 15 years now and really love it. Their kids are about your age.

It's easy access to both B-N and Peoria.

What areas of B-N and C-U are considered good neighborhoods. My fiance has high standards in this area as she likes to feel VERY safe! We'd probably rent at first to get to know the area and then buy a house. We'd like to keep rent below $1000 and our purchase max for a home would be close to $150 or $160,000.

There are a lot of great little towns around C-U., St. Joe, Savoy, Mahomet. You could even go as far as Tuscola, Bement or Monticello (a lot of my high school friends moved there). All of those towns are quite safe and within short driving distance to C-U's shopping, nightlife, University, etc. You should also be able to find housing within your budget.

+1 for Monticello if you want a homey feeling small-town that's close (~25 minute drive) from Champaign/Urbana. Its almost nostalgic with a historic courthouse square surrounded by small businesses like restaurants, pubs, doctors, gift shops, a drug store, insurance agency, law office, banks, barber shop, karate studio, dance and gymnastics studio, etc.
