As above..... the route down I-15 and then back up is a waste of time, and you ahve to do some climbing up and over to get form West Yellowstone to Big Sky. Approaching Big Sky from north or south have their own problems.
banjomike Thank you for the heads up! I certainly will be cautious. I've been in the canyon during the winter but other people were driving, so it's good to take extra caution.
Lookout Pass will be fine and I agree with the others about I90 all the way as ITD and MDOT do an excellent job unless a storm is particularly horrendous at that moment. Snoqualmie will be your iffy location.
