A few days ago it started getting smoky in the Pend Oreille area, but I could still see the other side of the lake. Then it kept getting worse. And worse. And worse. Now it's really bad. Can't even see the lake!

I know there's been talk of smoke polluting the area before. But is it always this bad, or is this the worst?

Tuesday rain, come on down!

Couple days ago, it was from the fire across the lake from Bayview/Farragut and the fire in Blanchard. Then yesterday and today the wind shifted and smoke from Oregon and Washington blew in.

Pretty awful. Dogs don't understand why I won't take them out for their walks.

This is nothing compared to what I just experienced driving up I-5 in Oregon on Tuesday. 9am and it was pitch black, not just dim, but completely black for miles. The smoke was so thick it was less than 1/4 miles visibility and the ash was falling like a winter snow storm. Idaho is just getting the downwind smoke from Washington and Oregon.

This is worse than the previous two Summers of smoke here. However; I am grateful that it is just smoke. The Blanchard fire burnt to within 2000 feet of our home. When everyone was evacuated, we were fairly certain we had lost our home.

The sliver moon was nice and yellow at 3:30 AM when I went out with the dog for a walk. We did about 2 miles than returned, then I took the female out for two miles and it actually was smokier than before. We only made it 1.5 miles.

But no (10AM) it is clearing up but still hazy.....https://fire.airnow.gov/?lat=42.9031...64992&zoom=10#

The PM2.5 (a good explanation: https://blissair.com/what-is-pm-2-5.htm) in our area of North Idaho is in the 100's. This is bad. Looking at the AQI throughout the states to the West of us, they are hitting in the 500's.

This is the worst we've seen, and we've been here full time since 2016, and frequent visitors since 2013.

Almost all this smoke is coming from fires in other states, which isn't uncommon.

We were kayaking up near Boundary Dam in NE WA yesterday, and it was even worse up there.

Hoping for a good rain soon!

Dave

Ironically, I see more people in North Idaho wearing masks now.

Believe me; it can get worse.
That pumpkin orange sky that was seen last week in photos of San Francisco is something I've seen twice. The last time was during the Yellowstone Park fires of 1988 when 2/3 of the park burned.

The orange color means there's a big fire that's close. The color comes from all the un-burnt or partially-burnt gasses the trees give off as they burn. If someone looks at the sun during those times, it will be purple.

You sure don't want to stay outside in that air for very long.

The smoke down here cleared up for a few days last week, but today, Sunday, it's back again and is pretty thick, but not like it it in NID. You folks are getting a lot of the Washington/Oregon smoke, and here, it's mostly coming from N. California. It's probably worse today in Twin Falls than in Idaho Falls- Twin is closer to Cali.

In the daytime it was so dark from the smoke the sensor lights stayed on.
