Cnynrat's right.

But there are also some things that Californians have become so accustomed to having that when they move here, they miss that stuff, even though a lot of it was either un-noticed or un-liked back in Cali.

It's always the smallest things that are the most irksome in most folk's lives, and like the song says- You don't know what you've lost til its gone.

I've known some folks who could never become accustomed to not having the things they once could find in California. A lot of those folks ended up leaving here and going somewhere else. Sometimes, it was back to California, and other times, it was on to another big city.

The weather? You might want to think twice about north Idaho. IMO, you have to really like winter and snow to enjoy living here. Full disclosure: I grew up in the northeast, and in 39 years of living in SoCal never learned to like the climate. Too monotonous, and I like the change of seasons. Yes, there are plenty of folks who come here from SoCal and love it - I am one. But there are also people who come here from there and after a winter or three head back for warmer climes.

The cultural amenities? They exist here, but not in anywhere near the variety and depth that you have available in SoCal. Want some killer Chinese food? There may be a great Chinese place somewhere in NID, but we haven't found it yet. Want to take in a great concert? They do have some good concerts at the Indian casino in CDA, and also in Spokane, and Sandpoint has their Festival. But overall there is nowhere near the variety and overall level of talent that you find playing in SoCal. Everyone who is anyone in the music business plays in SoCal at some point. They don't all make the journey to the inland northwest.

I could go on, but you get the point. The two areas are very different. That doesn't mean people don't move here from SoCal and thrive. But most often, it's people who have a certain level of dissatisfaction with one aspect or another of SoCal. There are reasons why they want to leave there, and they think those issues will be resolved in north Idaho. If they've spent enough time here to really understand what they will be getting into it usually works out to be a good move.

I'm not trying to talk you out of moving here. Just be sure you do your homework, and spend plenty of time where ever it is you decide to go before making a final decision. I think that's especially important given the large contrasts between where you live now and the sorts of places you are thinking about.

Dave

I have considered Idaho for awhile but aren't you concerned about Yellowstone?

Only if they are chronically paranoid.
Idaho is full of much more immediate trouble than worrying if Yellowstone Park will implode and fall in.

The more you learn about Yellowstone's geography the less you would be concerned.

It boils down to this:
If the implosion doesn't get ya, the aftermath will, and the aftermath will be the worst. There is no place in our nation that would be immune to one or the other or both.

The only way to be absolutely safe from Yellowstone is to move south of the equator.

I’d rather go fast than be like the movie The Road...
