everything runs in cycles. California has exhausted its upward mobility of when it was great to live here. It is on the downhill slide. Those that say different are living in a fantasy world. Their will be no rain coming to california.

And that lack of water means a wave of potentially unemployed, desperate people coming in this direction and we will dislike Californians even more because this time, they are not bringing money because their real estate is going to be worthless. Watch for the first wave in mid to late December.

They hate us? What did we do to them? Heck our states don't even border each other, we have a dynamic economy and they are known for potatoes!

California has experienced droughts before... it is also not the entire State.

Homes are still selling briskly and in some areas, like the SF Bay Area... they are going for top dollar...

Not everyone that moves to Idaho stays... one of the couples got a divorce over it... he liked it and she couldn't wait to move back and have her life back without snow and freezing temps and hot summers...

To each their own...

There are currently 16 states experiencing drought conditions including Idaho.

And please bear with me while I tie this data to Idaho and the Northwest.

NASA is reporting that California has about one year's worth of groundwater remaining and another Government site states reservoirs and lakes on the Colorado River are seriously threatened. Lake Mead, just reported today that it has to make cuts very soon to the supply to S. California.

Several towns in the valley have run out of water. The ground is sinking at the rate of 1 foot per year. The Salton Sea is drying up and exposing all the farm chemicals that have been accumulating for years. People are getting sick with asthma, including children (this, from the New Yorker Magazine).

The Delta is filled with snow run off and if it doesn't start raining hard and snowing by the traditional Thanksgiving holiday, well...we will see. Add to the rise of the ocean, saltwater is entering the delta at alarming rates.

As to real estate? That has always been the most bizarre distortion of the real world and so the carpetbaggers are at it again. Am I surprised at such stupidity in California? They have been buying inflated real estate in a desert forever.

AS to Idaho. There was a senate hearing on CSpan about 10 days ago, where the sixteen states testified, alongside the director of the Department of the Interior, whose department oversees water, among other issues.

Idahoans need not be concerned about the federal government coming in and taking water; each state governs the water within their borders. Added to that, tribal agreements prohibit the government from accessing natural resources from native land and that means not taking water from rivers that run through Indian reservations.

The federal government is mostly concerned about water wars, especially between Calif and Arizona and it has some long term plans that include more dams and water storage but at the end of the hearing, it was stated there are NO short term plans and as Governor Brown said to the LA Times last week, "we are entirely dependent upon Mother Nature." So good luck and God bless you because it does not look good.

Yes, Californian has gone through droughts before but not with a population of 40 million entitled souls.

All that being said, is this an opportunity for Idahoans to go into the water business?

Lake Tahoe Water level is rising and currently about 2 feet below rim level... Lake Tahoe is the 10th deepest lake in the world.

People buying in my area of California are putting down large down payments with up to 40% all cash...

Much of the water "Crisis" has to with maintaining water flows in the rivers for fish... this was never an issue until recent history... and if it comes to people or fish or fish and crops... fish win.

We have friends that family farm since the 1860's and ALWAYS irrigated with senior water rights... the river they use is full... recent very heavy rain in the mountains made it so... as of now... they may not take a single drop of water from the river, under penalty of law... this is first in over 150 years.

Just a little family history... my brother's farm has always has water and does today... a hundred years ago the region and such a severe drought that lingered that families actually packed up and moved... livestock died... the county historical society has many stories about locals coming with water wagons every day to fill and bring back water...

His water is artesian with no pumps required... it supplies drinkwater and water for the farm... he gets 38 psi at the tap all from nature...

Again... not everyone in California is in dire straights... and many that are have been cut off by the government... as mentioned... entire towns and cities...

California is immense... a problem with the manmade Salton Sea is 600 miles from Humboldt County... Marin County Water is actually above historical average.

California dismantled a state of the art desal plant because it was not needed... now that district could use it...

A little different idea about Lake Tahoe...may be deep but it's getting warmer, etc. according to Bay Area newspaper, within the few days.

Much talk about the level dropping and then the stats show level is going up...

About 600' deep it remains a constant 39F year round.

There is no denying we are going through a shift...

My grape farming friends in Washington state say it is a miracle... every year the crop just gets better.

There will always be winners and losers... sometimes it's many lifetimes, like Greenland and the Vikings... hundreds of years of cooling.

Or it could be the climate is just getting back to "Normal?

Again... I know a lot a people that moved to Idaho from the Bay Area... the first wave of people I know was after the Oakland firestorm back 1991... their kids and grandkids live their and for the most part... really, almost all are not coming back... Idaho lifestyle suits them.

Makes me wonder just how many native people going back a few generations there really are in Idaho...

My Great Grandmother came to Oakland as a child... so in my family at least... we go back at least 5 generations in Oakland California... the family business on one side started in 1942...

PS... looking out on Lake Tahoe right now and it looks great... there is a large lightning started fire not all that far from here that is affecting air quality some...
