In CT the hospital where our second child was born was a Baby Friendly labeled hospital. I never really knew it meant anything until when our son was born and they were militant about breastfeeding only. As with our first child the milk wasnt coming in yet and there was a screaming newborn who was hungry and wasnt being fed and two tired parents who desperately wanted something resembling sleep. They made us wait hours into the late hours of night before allowing our son to get some formula to eat and then sleep. The next morning we then got a meeting with the lactation consultant who approached us as if we gave our kid drugs.

The thing is, my wife did feed our kids breastmilk when it comes in. She would pump and we'd use that as long as we possibly could before having to buy formula (or get samples from pediatrician) as it was extremely cost effective. Sometimes the pro-breastfeeding crowd gets way too overzealous about it and pushing it down people's throats.

I just looked it up and apparently Kootenai Medical Center is currently pending in their Baby Friendly certification... I would assume someone in these forums has had a child birth experience there and could fill me in if they're that militant with the formula there or not.

BG79, I'm sorry you had a militant experience with the birth of your son. No, it is not supposed to be that way. Unfortunately some people take things too far and spoil it for the rest of us.
