I swear this is my last question-- maybe. My husband and I own a 17 ft fishing boat, designed for the lakes in MN and ND. I know that it can handle 10-15 ft swells, as we have had it on Lake Sakajewea (sp?) in ND. Anyway, can it go in the bay? If not are there decent lakes in the region where we can fish? Or are we better off putting it in storage?

10-15ft swells in a 17ft boat? Ever seen "The Perfect Storm"? Its not a matter of if you can take the boat in the bay, but what your comfort level is in rough conditions. On average, I'd say the bay is 2 ft. On a calm day less than a 1 ft, with a small caft advisory I'd say 3-5 ft. You should have no problems with a 17 ft boat on a normal day, but during a small craft advisory it would get sketchy. The swells in the bay are usually wind driven so the are quick rolling, choppy like swells. From personal experience, anything 3ft and above in a 17ft center console becomes difficult to fish and just plain uncomfortable to be in. There are infinate boating opportunities in HR, from ocean/bay ,to intercoastal waterway, and many rivers. Get on the water!

Oh yeah, the latest craze in the bay is fishing from kayacks. These guys launch and PADDLE out to the bridges and tunnels to fish. Pretty cool!

The bay and a 17 footer aren't the problem really. I took my 16 ft. out alot. Just abide by small craft advisories and you will have no problems. There are guys out by the HRBT in John Boats fishing everyday.

There are 2 rivers near Franklin, Va. (Nottoway & Chowan which meet and even leads out to Pamplico Sound. Several people fish here and there are tournaments. There are free boat ramps NEARBY but at Dockside(Nottoway River) in Franklin, you can pay a small fee and don't have to wait to load and unload.
It also has a nice restarant open I think Thursdays-Sundays.

I have seen 14 foot john boats at the second and third islands and a 16 foot john boat at the light tower. Taking a BIG chance. Better have really widely spaced isobars. I would just be careful with our changeable weather.
