And why don't the cities make it easier for people to do so by installing more public piers, and even opening low-rent public marinas? A look at a map shows that it's a great idea. Here's a story about a man in DC who started a water commute because he was thoroughly fed up with rush hour traffic there.

I do know a few people who commute by ferry every day. But that's really only an option if you live in downtown Portsmouth and work in downtown Norfolk.

BTW, if i recall correctly, there is a water taxi service in the area.

Soon there will be a ferry to transport between Suffolk and Newport News on the James River. This is once the new development on the old TCC campus in North Suffolk is complete which may take some years.

Because that would require tax dollars and heaven forbid we spend taxes on anything that will improve the quality of life around here... I'd much rather it go towards giving government workers bonuses and paying people that never show up for work.

Not to mention generous severance packages for those that are asked to resign/"retire"....
