It’s funny there is plenty of palms/palmetto trees in Anderson and Spartanburg cities and counties yet when it comes to Greenville it’s pretty scarce when it comes to palmetto trees. My friend and I joke that Greenville is anti-palmetto. Anyone the reason why lol?

I see very few in the entire upstate due to weather conditions here. It's too cold in the winter to get those trees to grow and stay healthy. Also, palmetto trees thrive in sandy soil. The clay soils in the Upstate are not good for palmetto or palm trees.

I would think Pametto trees do better in the sandier parts of the state from the midlands to the coast. It would be nice to see more in the upstate. I used to live at the Arbors at Brookfield apartments on Butler Rd in Mauldin and they had one in front of the leasing office.

Too cold for them. Wrong soil type also.

Also I think an over 10 or 15 ft fairly mature one can set builders and developers back 2K. That's a lot of $$ for something that might not make it.

I haven't seen any in either of those cities. Too cold up here and wrong soil.

Go down towards Columbia you have more Palmetto palm trees and down at the coast. Not much in the Upstate.

Does that mean there are no Palmetto bugs?

It doesn't deter Upstate homeowners to try to grow them. In my neighborhood, at least 3 people have invested some serious money into these. None of them look that great.
