I don’t know if the OP has done his trip or not but it might be cheaper to rent a U-Haul trailer in CA and drive it back.

We made two moves from Florida to Kittery, Maine with a U-Hail truck recently and both times U-Hail offered incentives for us to take one of their trailers and drop it off up north. Upwards of $350+. It seems so many people are moving to Florida and they have a surplus of trucks and trailers needing to go north.

It’s hard to see the trailer behind the truck and we didn’t want to get stuck somewhere having to back it up but it was tempting.

California is also a state many are moving from so they might be offering the same or similar discounts.

they are not that good as many are moving from CA just across the border to AZ or NV, so UHaul's repositioning cost isn't that high. Additionally, since AZ is their HQ and where their Technical Center is located. many CA residents find it cheaper to hop over to Phenix, rent and go back to CA for their move to the east cost.
