I went to Victoria, B.C. on a mini vacation with my son. On one of our many walks discovered this odd looking tree (at least it was to us!)
The bark looks like the outside of a pineapple actually, and the "leaves" are just a green version of it.....

It is a Monkey Puzzle Tree (Araucaria araucana). No all that unusual in the PNW.

Second the Monkey Puzzle. They would be more common, but they are difficult to handle at nurseries - very thorny!!!

I am trying to find out what kind of shrub I have, I think it is in the Magnolia family, it has small pale yellow flowers that look like Magnolia but smell like bananas (a wonderful smell), my grandmother used to call them Banana Fiscatta, does anyone out there have any idea what kind of shrub this is and if it is indeed in the Magnolia family?
