Mosquitoes are almost non-existent; no-see-ums are another matter--certain times of the year they can be a problem but only because they get in the pool. We have regularly scheduled insect/pest control so that probably keeps a lot of the critters away.

My neighbor has lived in his house 30 years and says he used to see an occasional alligator but hasn't seen one in the canal for the last 9 years. I do see an occasional raccoon, a couple of otters plus the usual black snakes.

Bing Maps also shows the names of the canals.

I completely agree about the mosquitoes - I've lived here for 2 years now and I am on a canal - ZERO mosquitoes. I used to live in New Hampshire and got eaten alive by them up there - not here.

I ride my bike almost every night after work, and the no-see-ums can be bothersome - I'll ride through a cloud of them and probably swallow about 50 of them! They don't seem to bother me otherwise though.

One thing that really bothers me, however, is sand fleas. Well, I don't know if that's what they are, but they are some sort of biting insect that lives in the sand. When I go to the beach at dusk, if I forget the bug spray, I come home with welts all over my ankles and calves and they itch like crazy for days.

I've seen 2 gators in the canal behind my house (which is a saltwater canal, btw) - both times they were pretty small - about 4 ft. All my neighbors agreed that it is a very rare thing to see them in saltwater canals and were quite surprised to see them. We called the FWC and they came and caught them and told us they would be releasing them elsewhere where they would not be considered a nuisance.

Are there extra fees or tax assessments for homes on the canals?

No, but the valuations are generally higher so you would pay higher taxes.
