Hello,

Can anyone provide any insight on best places to live for a new family relocating to the Fort Lauderdale Area. We have 3 children, and would appreciate any information on the best neighborhoods / schools.

God bless and thank you......

Hey there! I see that you are moving to Ft. Lauderdale from Chicago... with three kids! We moved here (with our THREE kiddos) just over a year ago. We rented for about six months in a neighborhood called Dolphin Isles. Very nice neighborhood, mostly winter birds (so many houses remain empty for most of the year) and not many kids AT ALL! Then we bought a house in a neighborhood called Coral Ridge (NOT Coral Ridge Isles or Country Club!!!) because by default our children would be able to attend one of the TOP public schools in the state: Bayview Elementary. Coral Ridge is NOT cheap by any means (with a 3 br. home starting at around $400), BUT just being able to send the kids to such an amazing school might be worth the price tags (if at all doable). Now, even though the school is AMAZING (Better than MANY private ones), we are still considering leaving Ft. Lauderdale. First off, there is no real downtown like, for example, in Chicago. The only Zoo and Aquarium are in Miami (at least 1.5 hours drive). Also, kids do NOT play outside at all, so if you are like me and find that playdates are extremely odd, then this won't cut it! The beach is SUPER close by, but we'd rather have our children play outside with friends than alone in the beach... Neighborhoods close to beach are full of OLD folks (which makes this a GREAT retirement destination) and gay couples (Ft. Lauderdale is ranked amongst op meccas for gays in the whole nation). We are super tolerant, but of course that usually means less children around. What else? Oh, after Bayview Elementary, get ready to pay A LOT of cash to send your kids to PRIVATE. Middle is Sunrise and then Ft Lauderdale High... I know my kids won't be going there! So, all in all, we've met AMAZING friends who LOVE Ft. Lauderdale and this neighborhood (although they only have babies) and the beach is GORGEOUS and the weather (althought HOT like HELL many times) is nice. This is NOT for everyone, but if you LOVE the beach, want to have boat, don't mind not having a real city feel and don't mind scheduling playdates (vs free play outside), then it might work! Let me know if you have any more questions!!!

Heard great things about Weston-zuela! We are just NOT into the cookie cutter type of neighborhood (after living in New Orleans for so long!) and the distance to the beach and husband's job is a killer. I think Weston would be a great option for the family moving from Chicago, though. Also, Cooper City or Pembroke Pines... Anything close to the beach is usually NOT very kid-friendly... Also, anything north of Ft. Lauderdale is usually full of retirees. JFYI THANK YOU!

There are just as many retirees living south and west of Fort Lauderdale as to the north. The largest retiree areas are eastern Pompano Beach (on the beach, 14th Street Bridge area high rises), Deerfield Beach, Margate, Sunrise Lakes, Hollywood, and Hallandale Beach.

The eastern cities do tend to be dominated by young people, retirees, snowbirds, and tourists. The western suburbs are more family oriented.
