Living in Fort Lauderdale but hanging in the Keys quite a bit, the beaches are not the same but yeah, that's not really why you go there. Like what livingthedream alluded to, you go there for the vibe. Have a couple beers, some good food and take in the atmosphere. When venturing to the Keys for a day trip we go to Founders Park. Small beach and the water is shallow/warm but it's a decent one to hit with the family. It has a playground, grills, basketball hoops, baseball diamonds (I play with my boys), swimming pool and water sport rentals. Then afterward we'll go for dinner at Hog Heaven, IFC, Jimmy Johnson's or Alabama Jacks. So..... I suggest Founders Park. It'll cost you because it's a state park. And, they only take cash. If you're staying at a hotel in Key Largo, it's free, though.

Founders Park is not free though. Last time I was there it was $10 per non-resident.

For a reasonably nice family beach in Key Largo and a short drive from Dade/Broward, stay at the Key Largo Hilton. Their manmade beach is nice, with all the resort amenities and watersports. Not cheap, but a nice weekend away, and a good kid-friendly beach (as it is on the Gulf side with no waves).

We spend a few months in the winter in Big Pine Key which is around MM40. It is two miles from Bahia Honda State Park, which is spectacular. Our grand children visit for a week and love going to Bahia. The beaches are very nice, for little ones. Another great beach is Sombrero, it has a large area for the kids to play along with a nice long beach. We also go to Coco Plum Beach because it is pet friendly and are able to walk quite a distance. Anne's Beach can be crowded and there is very little place to sit and/or park. IMO the lower Keys offer more than the Key Largo area.

Okay, question for all of you Floridians. e are looking at going to Florida for a vacation, no kids or dogs. I am a Scuba Instructor so a dive or two would be nice but this trip is not about diving, it is about reconnecting. Eventually we are looking at the possibility of relocating to Florida, just tired of Kansas!

My other half loves to lay on the beach and relax, I said Beach, I am game for anything. It does not have to be a one stop vaca either. Not interested in Miami Orlando is a good place to visit but do not want to live there. Any suggetions

It will be warm.

Fort Myers Beach and then a reef diving tour $$$ in the Keys and visit with the dolphins.

The sand on the Gulf is more sugar sand and fun to play with. Sand on the Atlantic coast is coarser. Midwesterners gravitate to the west coast of Florida, New Yorkers and New England residents to the east coast. The cultures are different.
