Most store bought hash browns are mush. If I make them I follow this guys recipe and they turn out fantastic. Crunchy, not greasy- just fantastic.

Boy, I enjoyed that hash brown video. From scratch is always the best.

I admit, have bought the Trader Joe's frozen hash brown patties from time to time...

How I wish potatoes are healthier. Maybe I should try making home made has browns (shredded always) with the healthier purple or sweet potatoes. Anyone tried it?

That's a fun video, but he put the colander on his head and mixed the potatoes with his hands and dirtied half the stuff in the kitchen to cook ONE potato - with no onions!

This week I dumped some Ore-Idas in a bowl and mixed them with sour cream, a little milk, melted butter, S&P, a little onion and garlic, bacon crumbles and cheddar cheese and gave them 25 min. in a greased cake pan. We can hardly stay out of them.

don, we don't have Waffle House in this neck of the woods but the first time I tried them on a road trip I was hooked!

When I was a youth I would have them all the time. Made from scratch (Yukon gold) I would boil about 6-8 good sized potatoes for about 5 minutes, then run cold water over after they cooled about 2 minutes and dry on paper towels on counter and then put in refrigerator.

Each time I wanted would hand grate them and place them in a large pan/skillet (seemed to taste best when in the old cast iron skillet) within which I'd already have onions and a little amount of butter frying at medium hot and then spread the shredded / grated spuds evenly onto the large pan and fry and turn until the appropriate golden brown desired.

Everyone else in family would want some, so I went to making large 'batches'. The trick was getting that seared browned crispy consistency through out. Occasionally if my mom had some bacon lard I'd add a little dab of the lard along with the butter. Topic makes me hungry thinking about it. Yum.

Now you're going to make me go out in 22 degree weather to the Aldi's up the street. Lol.

How do you prepare them? I've wanted to try my new air fryer, but am not sure that's the best method.

Aldi's hash browns taste good, and you get more for your $$. But other store brands also taste fine:
PC, Hannaford, Walmart, etc. Most come in a 10-12ct tray.

As for cooking them I sometimes throw them into the microwave for less mess cleanup. But they cook fine
in the air fryer. See some videos here:

400 degrees for 8-10 minutes flipping halfway seems to work best.

We’ve grown purple ( or royals- whatever ) and frankly I don’t like their taste as much as Yukon or German butterballs. But on the rare occasion I make hash browns I use russets or big Idaho spuds. We do use the clarified butter and they turn out crispy as all get out.

Butter and potatoes and no added bs. Simple as can be too. Honestly takes little time to prep.

My son and daughter like their runny eggs over these.

You should check out some of his other recipes and vids. He can cook some stuff, and funny in his own way.
