I make a dinner on New Years Eve every year for our friends, and keep the leftovers for the next day which I make into Lucky Soup. Does anyone else make lucky foods for the new year?
My menu is:
Smoked sliced ham (pork for moving forward in life)
Collard greens (collards for dollars)
Hoppin' John (peas for pennies)
Lentils (resemble coins)
Cornbread (made with creamed corn for gold)
Rice (for prosperity, protection, and good fortune)
Thin spaghetti (long unbroken noodles bring long life)
Usually the rice is gone by the next day so the soup is made with the noodles and the everything else but the cornbread.
We have no plans, but I expect that I will make a boneless leg of lamb, mint jelly, potatoes and a salad and veg. Rolls and butter and a yummy dessert.
If I didn’t already have the other things, I would have made pork and sauerkraut.
No matter what my main course may be, I am definitely putting on some black-eyed peas (cooked with ham and bacon) for good luck. Also planned is my version of chunky green chile cornbread.
For years we always had leg of lamb. But it is so outrageously expensive now, that we just order a ham from Honey Baked. May cost as much but not as much work.
We do an annual open house for 60-70 people. Small house and, Yes, it's crowded. Everyone else brings finger foods - no utensils are provided. We supply water, beer, soda and wine and, yes, we use real glass wine and champagne glasses. Some guests add to the wine stash. Except for two years of covid, this would be our 9th year.
New year's day is something special just for DH and me. Giant king crab legs or 1+ pound lobster tails. INSANELY expensive.
BBQ steak and potatoes, Waldorf salad.
Dessert? Maybe Sees candy. We're kind of tired of sweets.
Maybe Amaretto for a midnight toast, or perhaps we'll find a new liqueur to try.
Nothing special it's just me, my husband and his mom. Saturday night we are going out for dinner. Sunday will be appetizers, shrimp cocktail. Husband also wants to make his stuffed peppers. I'll most likely be asleep before the ball drops LOL.
