What gives?
Frankly the shows I TIVO give me great ideas and recipes. I keep a notepad to remind me to find techniques or recipes on my computer and then I try all sorts of fun new things. I remember life before computers and TIVO. Cookbooks, experiments and word of mouth is all we had.
The only "cooking" shows I watch are the device infomercials on early morning Telemundo (it's something part of work). All they succeed in doing is making me famished and wishing I was home cooking.
But, to be fair and looking at some of the influences that turned me into a cook, I suppose what we aspire to in entertainment does have some effect. What turned me into a cook, especially a late night one? The character "Laura" in the Phantom (Lee Falk) book "The Mystery of the Sea Horse". Add to that "C.D." in "Roxanne", an episode of "The Wild, Wild West" and "Piper" in "Charmed"........at least.
Maybe it is a function of current TV watching society. That is, if you see a character or a scenario/scene you like, cooking without the details of the recipes, you want to mimic that character/scene in your own way. If, on the other hand, one is hooked into reality (WHICH I AM NOT!) TV, they want more, more, more of it without actually doing it themselves.
These so called cooking shows on now are more for the drama than actual cooking. And who has truffle oil in their kitchen? Not everyone is a multi millionaire living in The Hamptons or married to a millionaire rancher in Oklahoma.

Yeah, I'm not real big on the cooking 'personalities', I miss seeing Jacques Pepin who never tried to be the star but was content to let the food take that position.
I enjoy watching The Chew. I DVR it each day, and then skim through to see if they're making anything that interests me. I've made quite a few things from the show.

I think Ree is pretty silly on TV and she waste inordinate space with endless silly chatter and photographs on her blog but she does have some good recipes.
