What ? Lille, ugly? I mean it's by far not the prettiest city on earth by yes, it's pretty. It has a little of the flamish style that Bruxelles has, a great one. I found you a little bit rude with Lille... Maybe you don't like the style
Because I would like to visit them actually, before people discover that Paris is an expensive trap and go there too.
Overrated was the wrong word. I would say hyped (especially by Francophiles which have no idea of the life in France and thinks that everything is perfect).

Yes it happens everywhere, I enjoyed Japan and Korea a lot, but living there? Hell no way. Impossible.
And in term of quality of life, Paris is certainly not a reference in France. It's too big that's all with all the consequences it has.
Yet, what cities are trashing it for a good tourism experience?
Budapest is very pretty also, especially along the river at night with the beautiful buildings are flooded in light.
Indeed, but far to be the size of Paris. The metropole of Budapest is 2.5M inhabitans and 2 538 km2, while (inner, withing the peripherique) Paris is 2.2M for 105km²...
What I mean is that for example 2 days in Budapest are great to see an important of the city, in Paris you multiply easily by two... like Roma or London.
Simply because everything else being equal, Paris is bigger. And big and pretty cities are rare, certainly not hundreds.
French culture can seem monotonous (until it doesn't) but Paris is never that way if you keep exploring and getting off the beaten path. The city's diversity is what keeps it interesting.
