Personally, I do not like them. There is nothing like a secure fence between your dog/dogs and the street. My sisiters neighbor across the street had one and their dog always ran thru it. I had a friend who put one in and the first time their dog got zapped it would never go in the yard again. Freaked the poor dog out. They put up a nice fence!

Sorry a fence that a dog can't go through ain't gonna happen in 1 acre.

#1 - major expense $$$$ #2 - I have had a small puppy crawl under a chain link fence so with a small breed it is not as secure as everyone thinks a chain link would be. and #3 part of the yard is unfenceable as one side is all large trees. And I cannot really fence in the full front yard, as that is where the dog escapes from... we are on waterfront.

Brands? Innotek - are they good? That is the one we are looking at. Thanks.

oh yeah - I did just talk to one person at a pet shop - they said the I.F.s sometimes do not work with the racing breeds: i.e. italian greyhound, whippet, greyhound. Because they run so fast after prey - they will blow right through the electronic barrier.

Very true also of any dog with a high prey drive. They are through the "fence" before they realize it, and when they come to their senses, they are outside the barrier and get zapped when trying to return. This can be pretty traumatic for some dogs.

gardner34, we have the Innotek fence. We also have several levels of property, but just ran the wire all around the perimeter(over an acre). The unit itself is in the basement, and we haven't had any problems with it. If the wire gets accidently cut, the beep is loud enough to hear upstairs. The only issue I've had is with the collars. They don't last forever, and there is no way to replace the rechargeable batteries in them. I have a couple that I've had to replace. I have a lab and a golden, and both dogs trained very easily to it.

The guy could not control his dogs and before you knew it, his 2 dogs ran in to my sisters yard and attacked her beagle. They dragged him in to the street so all while he as being attacked, he was also getting shocked because he was out of "range". His ear was ripped off and he had 2 puncture wounds in his back that he had to have tubes put in to drain. He had to have 2 surgeries and tried to save his ear but they couldn't. So my point is, yes, you can control your dog from going out of the fence line, but you can NOT control what comes in. Please, PLEASE re-consider getting an invisible fence.
This is why I don't like them. The risk of another animal (or even a nasty kid!) coming along is too great.

Exactly, I have read that all over. So many people have lost their dogs with that first run through!
