In Orlando it is illegal to leave a pet unattended in heat and owners can face a citation. I've had cops laugh at me too but I always have one of these in my glove box:

Leave Your Pet in a Car, Pay a Big Fine - Care2 News Network

It's an article explaining how heat impacts dogs and also about the citations that Animal Services gives out. I also take these as flyers and put them on windshields.....usually after seeing a dog unattended. I still call the cops if it's hot and I feel like the dog is in danger. And they can laugh at me all they want. xoxo

....Oh, and in the wise words of Ann Landers (or was it Dear Abby?)....don't leave your kid/dog anywhere where you wouldn't leave a million bucks in cash lying about.....

Would you leave your child in that vehicle unattended, with a fur coat on ! Common sense kinda prevails here. Heat kills...period ! The temperature in a motor vehicle, exposed to direct sunlight will esculate beyond belief in very short order. Be nice to your mutt....he or she is the best friend you will ever have !

I never leave my dogs in the car for more than a Jiffy store run if it's hotter than 70 degrees and make sure they're in shade or at night.

However, last year, the police followed me for about a mile and pulled me over. The officer started laughing. Someone had reported me for having un-restrained children in the car.

I can see it now, legistation requiring doggie belts. I'll have to strap my dogs in doggie seats! (Do they come in the "hang-my-face-out-the-window" unit?)

Just like everything else, responsible pet-parents will be and there are those who aren't.

We all know dogs get hotter than people and much quicker, right?

Anyway - one time I had to call the cops because someone left their two toddlers in the car ALONE. Can you believe it? Any sicko could have snatched those kids. So if people are this dumb with their kids just imagine what they do with their dogs.

You mean you let your dogs run loose in the car WHILE you are driving?!?! What happens if you need to stop suddenly? Or if someone hits you? Or if you hit someone? Those poor dogs will be slammed against the dash, thrown out the window, or thrown through the windshield!

Yes, there ARE dog seatbelts! Noodle always wears his seatbelt. Cookie is too tiny--they don't make them small enough. She rides in a hard-sided cat carrier (with lots of padding on the inside) on the floor on the passenger side...with the seat pulled up to wedge that carrier in so it cannot move.

It's just as dangerous for dogs to be unrestrained in a moving vehicle as it is for children.

Yes, my dogs run loose in the car. They run loose in the yard.

They love the freedom of jumping from the back to the front seat to windows.

They're adult dogs, not children, they have balance.

The joy they experience is worth the risk.

I live in Arizona and there is no way you can leave a dog in the car! Every year people leave their pets and children after forgetting about them and most of the time they end up dead. Last year there was a story of a police officer here that forgot about his german shepard in his patrol vehicle for hours and it ended up dying I am not sure about anywhere else, but you get in BIG trouble here and it is just wrong to leave anything living in your vehicle... even for a few minutes with no air conditioning!!

We're in Fl and my husband is disabled but he is among the living
He often voluntarily waits in the car (Car & AC off) while I go into a store.

If I've had to have my dog(s) with me, I'd say I am even more careful than with the husband about them being shaded, having water, etc but again.....common sense goes a long way and others should also use it when they see an animal in a car
