Everyone is always asking me what kind of dog do I have, and I was very curious myself, so I paid for the Wisdom Panel dog DNA test (a blood test the vet does) and I just got the results back today.
It said that she was German Shepherd and Miniature Pinscher.
I attached two pictures of Jolly. She weighs 30 lbs, and you can see in the second picture relatively well that she has a really long body, but short legs. We always knew she was part GSD, but we didn't know any other breed. She was rescued by the ASPCA and was filmed as a part of Animal Planet's Animal Precinct, and in the episode she was in, they say that they took her away from a huge Rottweiler in a basement, and there is a shot of a male dog that looked a lot like her, who was smaller. But maybe the Rottweiler wasn't her mother after all, they never did say what other dogs were in that basement (and I think there were many, the Rottie, which they never showed, was very agressive, so they couldn't get down there).
We always thought she had Dachshund and Jack Russell. But the Minipin does make sense because JRTs and MPs are both terriers and bred to do the same exact tasks, and she has the personality of either.
But the point here is, I'm not saying I completely believe the test, but it's nice to have something to consider. Have any of you done this DNA test or any other? Post pictures or talk about your opinions.
Well, min pins are classified as toy breeds, but they are terriers.
Everyone always guesses Corgi, but I knew she wasn't because I really feel like its impossible to escape having their ears.
Corgis never have much of a tail at all.
The curled tail does not, IMHO resemble that of either a minpin *or* a GSD.
How confusing.
But she sure is cute, and thank goodness you found her (and she found you.)
I did the cheaper cheek swab test on a dog I thought was black lab/broder collie. The test said GSD/GSP. Here is her picture. When she lays on her side and her ears are sticking up, she does look like a GSD. She's about 95 lbs now, maybe 20 lbs overweight. The cheek test costs about 55-80, depending on who you order it from, I think the blood test is 300-400.

I haven't done the test ...waiting for prices to decrease.
We know our guy is a sheltie or Aussie mix but we would like to know the mix. Thats a tired pic of him after a day at my parents farm.

Both are cute! My Layla was only 57 lbs when I adopted her, about 20 lbs underweight. She ate a lot and gained a lot. Now, I can't get her to slim down!
The Wisdom Panel test costs something like $140... the new cheek swab test from Metamorphix costs $125. They both detect over 100 AKC breeds. I might do the other one day to see if they compare at all, but it might open a new can of worms.

I think she has a Shiba tail, but you know, when you combine weird breeds, anything can happen. It's not like they have one trait from one and one from the other, it could mix and create something totally different, so who knows.
