She is of a breed that gets multiple lumps & bumps. They are usually just fatty lumps. The cytology was different this time. The veterinarian was brief & grim. He is referring to a canine oncologist. I have lost a dog to lymphoma. Prior to that, none of my dogs have had any type of cancer.

I'm in shock & really not ready to start doing intensive internet searches.

Has anyone here had a dog diagnosed with melanoma?

I’ve rescued many dogs through the years but never had one with cancer.

Like TT I have rescued and owned many dogs over the years and most of them, if they lived a long life, wound up with many lumps and bumps all over. My vets have always been very good about measuring them and keeping track of their rate of growth.

Only once did we have a dog with cancer on its skin and I'm not sure if it was diagnosed as melanoma but I remember it seemed to shoot up over night in the form of something similar to a hard pimple. But that pimple kept growing like crazy so I brought him in to the vet within the first week of it showing up and it was cancer. The vet cut it out, stitched the skin back up and he never had to have any type of radiation or chemo. It was located on the bridge of his nose!

Our dog had it back when there weren't many canine specialists so it might just be routine now that if cancer cells are present the vet sends a dog to an oncologist. Our 14 year old mixed breed has his own cardiologist ; )

Try your best to be upbeat with your dog because they pick up on our emotions as I'm sure you already know. I hope it turns out to be something that can be snipped out and she and you both can put it behind. I know it's hard. It's so very hard when our pets are sick or injured ... or in my case, just getting old and you see all the things they just can't do like they used to.

I appreciate the replies. This bump is on the edge of her lower left eyelid, with a second one forming along the lower right eyelid. The vet is good at checking her.

She's a rescue, just like all of them, and has been through ****. She had the bonus of being harrassed by our neighbor. She made it past the 8-year mark, so I thought we were home-free to a long & healthy life.

If anyone has any experience with canine melanoma, please respond.

I had a black dog get melanoma. It first showed as a slight bleed to a toenail. Eventually it spread to affect his nervous system apparently. The symptoms were confusion and looking at me is a curious way. RIP.

I have a rescue that has a lot of bumps, and one was very aggressive that was on her mouth. I had it removed and it was cancerous. But it's been over a year since then and she's fine. She's 14 years old and a larger dog (B&T Coonhound) so I don't know how much longer she'll be around.

What did the vet say? Can it not be removed?

Can I ask, how long did he live after dx? Did you seek treatment?

This vet doesn't want to do anything. He is referring us to a canine oncologist. I didn't know there was such a thing. We live in a rural area & her practice is pretty far away. He said that she does travel to our area.

This is new to me. I'm now remembering that one of our earlier girls had a lump on her leg that our then-vet biopsied, found it to be cancer, removed it himself, & it was over.

This vet took over the practice from our former vet, who became ill & retired very suddenly. That vet was a one-stop shop, very direct, hands-on & old-school. I miss that.

Has anyone here taken their dog to a canine oncologist?

One of my close friends has a Husky that has liver cancer. She took the dog to University of Florida vet center because that's in her area, and they are caring for him. He wasn't even expected to live 3 days but it's been 3 weeks since they discovered it, and he's still alive and kicking. They are not a canine oncologists, either.

Honestly, I think you need a second opinion. The vet should just remove the lump and then move forward with care as needed.
