I am searching for a dog leash that will last, and not break. I have a fairly small dog, 23lbs. I have always used retractable leashes with her. With every retractable leash I have bought, both expensive and cheap, they have always broken after a few months. They all used tape type of leases. The tape tends to drag on the ground. The spot where it drags wears, and eventually breaks. Sometimes it looks fine, but while walking her the next thing I know is she is walking along with a piece of the broken lease attached to her collar. I am willing to switch to a non-retractable leash, as long as it is more than 6 foot long, but it seems every lease I have found on Amazon has customer reviews saying the lease broke in one spot or another. Any suggestions for a good strong lease that won't break? Just to be clear, the lease is not breaking from her pulling on it, it is just the friction from dragging on the ground which wears the nylon tape in a spot, and it eventually breaks.

Leather leashes tend to last the longest. You can find them longer than 6'.

I've walked several dogs (35 to 50 lbs) using the same retractable leashes I bought years ago. None broke as you describe. Part of it may be because I don't extend and lock the leash so it drags on the ground, I keep even tension on it using the retractor mechanism. Some sections end up fraying because the dog would wander in and out of roadside bushes, but it never got so bad the leash broke. I repaired frayed spots promptly so it would still retract smoothly.

You might try the same: when I noticed a fraying spot, I reinforced the weave with permanent fabric glue. It smoothed down the frayed bits and didn't interfere with retraction because the glue gets absorbed into the weave and remains flexible. Once or twice I've added some reinforcing stitches with heavy duty poly thread.

First, don't use a retractable leash. Go to a regular pet supply store and actually touch what you're buying.

Why more than 6 ft.?

6 foot seems kind of short, but I may need to re-evaluate that.

6 ft is standard in training & shows. Leash should Never touch the ground.

Retractable leashes can be problematic. I always use leather leashes. If the dog pulls, teach the dog to walk properly on a leash.

get at least a 20 foot retractable leash,,dogs need to be able to sniff, wander and explore their surroundings a little more than 6 feet..and if it's dragging the ground you must not know how to use it..it's retractable for a reason..unless you keep it in a locked position with X amount of feet out of the handle/retractor it certainly won't ever drag the ground..

Agreed the leash should not contact the ground. Disagree that a dog “needs” 20 feet of leash to wander and sniff. Your dog should be close enough to you to be in your control, not 20 feet away while you follow. Plenty of sniffing to be had on a 6 foot solid lead.
