This has not happened since he was a puppy, but he broke that habit. Lately whenever we walk, he is attracted to the poop that others are not picking up and he has put it in his mouth to eat. I was able to get it out with a paper towel of course. I try walking a different direction and he ends up finding it again. In general, he scavenges the grass, so I presume he is trying to find a place to potty but no he is looking for food and ends up putting stuff in his mouth which could be food but has been poop lately.
Our dogs have a choice of poop they eat... goat poop, chicken poop, cat poop, horse poop... I don't think they usually eat dog poop, but I don't really know.
I've never had one that did. Rolling in environmental contributions left by another species and bringing it home to share was another story! The absolute worst was bear plops during salmon season and seal/sea lion (we used to run on a beach where it would wash up from nearby haulout rocks). Unimaginable.
You may find these informative OP though they aren't consistent about the distinction between eating another dog's poop and that of other species:
One of mine went through a phase of eating her own poop but in researching I found it wasn't an unusual trait. She did stop eventually.
My current dog doesn't do it, but she's a prolific sniffer and sometimes she finds what I think is rabbit poop. Unfortunately by the time I realize it, it's too late! None of my dogs actually ate other dogs' poops though.
My dogs eats anything and I think he eats poop too. I can't stop him, he's so fast. But he was rescued from being kept in a cage covered in his own excrement so what can we expect of this poor baby? His diet is pretty good so I don't think that's it in his case.
My first Silken Windhound Dazzle was a poop eater but never ate his own, only the poop of others. It seems to be rather common in sighthounds. I bought him a greyhound muzzle that had a poop guard and was going to make him wear it when I took him to the local dog park. That first time there he found some very soft poop and smashed that muzzle and poop guard down in it, so it covered the guard then ran around trying to say Hello to all the people there. I am sure he was wearing a silly grin on his face and thought he was such a funny boy. Needless to say I never made him wear it there again and I myself would wander around picking up poop that the lazy folks never do. My vet said not to worry it is a rather common issue with dogs,
Google it. I think I recall that behavior having something to do with something missing in his diet.
I thought the same thing but his Vet told me that is a myth and is not true.
