Some dogs are more susceptible to heat issues than others! Here in NC it gets pretty hot during the summer....walking on pavement and other hot surfaces is certainly uncomfortable for dogs. I see people leaving their dogs out in the hot sun for long periods of time and it drives me crazy. While my dog, a Dutch Shepherd, tolerates the heat pretty well, I bring her in the house for most of the afternoon...prudent thing to do.
The top of the ground does get hot. But we had a dog when I was growing up that would dig a hole to lay down in. I asked my dad why and he said the dirt in that hole was a lot cooler and it cooled them off to lay in it. You may have seen off the grid homes that are heated and cooled by underground ducts pulling hot and cold air through a tunnel that stays the same temperature year round. The dogs naturally know about this and dig the holes to stay cool.
I'm not saying to leave the dogs out there, but they do know how to take care of themselves.
Yes, many dogs dig "daybeds" to escape surface heat but be aware that once exposed, the soil in those beds warms up eventually. As it does, your dog may move on and dig another fresh one! My first cattledog in CO certainly did. She had beds everywhere following the shade; the early midmorning bed, the late morning bed, lunch bed, early afternoon bed, late midafternoon bed...you get the idea. Shade, lots of water, maybe a kiddie pool should help!

I looked back 5 pages, and found zip on the subject of elevated temperatures. So here goes-
Using my non-contact thermometer, I decided to “ping†a few surfaces in the back forty.
Note: It’s 1:30PM on 04JULY, so it’s about as intense sun as it gets here. (You should be able to see where I am.)

I've got the same question! I would've thought real grass should be cooler than the pavers or the concrete - although the concrete is obviously benefitting from being light in color.

Yes, it's fake grass. Same brand as in the front yard. It's also touted to be "pet friendly" with regards to pee/poop and also temperature. It does ok in the pee/poop dept, but as you can see, the temp is still quite elevated. I can get the brand if you want (I think.)
I'd never let an animal, have to put up with those kinds of temperatures, unless absolutely necessary.
Except maybe a gopher. I got no use for those darn things. Speaking of which, I think I have one on the bank.
I knew I couldn't stand that much time in a cubicle or even 4 walls, so I found positions in the field. You're young, so make some changes soon so you're not trapped, possibly a career change.
